- Online card payments in Qatar hit QR4.74bn in December 2025 alone (QCB). Ecommerce is now about a quarter of all payment-system transactions.
- Your must-have stack: Visa/Mastercard, Apple Pay and NAPS debit through QPAY, plus cash on delivery for first-time buyers.
- Local debit cards, including Himyan, pay online through QPAY. A gateway without QPAY loses those shoppers.
- Published rates run from 1.10% for NAPS debit to about 2.5–2.85% plus a fixed fee for cards. Qatar has no VAT, so nothing is added on top.
- Stripe and Shopify Payments don't open accounts in Qatar. Tabby and Tamara don't list Qatar as a merchant market either.
Shoppers in Qatar pay online with Visa and Mastercard, Apple Pay and local debit cards. Offer all three, keep cash on delivery for new customers, and you've covered almost everyone.
Qatar is small, but it spends like a much bigger market. Almost everyone is online, incomes are high, and Doha orders often arrive the same day.
There's one thing to get right. Local debit cards, including the new Himyan card, pay online through a national gateway called QPAY. Your checkout needs to connect to it.
Here's how to set that up, what it costs and which gateway to pick.
How do shoppers in Qatar pay online?
Most online payments in Qatar are card payments, either typed in or tapped through Apple Pay. Local debit cards matter most for Qatari nationals and mass-market shoppers. Cash on delivery still exists, but it's falling.
Here's why the mix looks like that. About 88% of Qatar's residents are expats, and many of them shop with international credit cards and Apple Pay. Qatari households and price-focused shoppers lean more on debit cards from local banks.
Here's what each method means for your store:
- Visa and Mastercard. Credit and international debit cards. They're the default for expats and high earners.
- Apple Pay. Live in Qatar since August 2021. It's the quickest mobile checkout, and local NAPS debit cards work inside it.
- NAPS debit cards. Cards from Qatari banks that run on NAPS, the national debit network. Online, they pay through QPAY, and the shopper confirms with a PIN and a one-time code.
- Himyan. Qatar's own national card brand, launched in March 2024. It runs on NAPS, so online it works like any other NAPS debit card.
- Fawran. Qatar's instant bank-transfer system, launched in 2024. It supports request-to-pay, so shoppers can pay from their bank account without a card.
- Mobile wallets. QMP connects wallets such as ipay and Ooredoo Money by phone number or QR code. They're a small slice of payments today.
- Cash on delivery (COD). The shopper pays the courier at the door. It's useful for winning the first order from a brand shoppers don't know yet.
Samsung Pay and Google Pay work in Qatar too. They add a little reach on Android phones.
The demand behind all this is big and steady, month after month.
December was the biggest month on the chart, with 11.77 million online card payments. For the bigger picture of who buys online in Qatar, see our Qatar ecommerce guide.
NAPS, QPAY and Himyan: how local debit works online
NAPS is Qatar's national debit switch, running since 1996. QPAY is the Qatar Central Bank's ecommerce gateway for those cards, live since 2005. Himyan is the newest card brand on the network.
Why does that matter to you? A Qatari debit card often can't pay through an ordinary Visa or Mastercard checkout. It needs QPAY.
You don't sign a contract with QPAY itself. You reach it through a member:
- Banks. QNB, Commercial Bank, QIB, Doha Bank and the other major Qatari banks are QPAY members.
- Payment companies. Sadad, Dibsy and TESS are QPAY members too, and they're usually quicker to set up for an online store.
- Regional gateways. Some reach QPAY through their local partners. Checkout.com, for example, lists QPay as a method your account manager switches on.
QPAY isn't only for cards. It also takes cardless payments from bank accounts through Fawran, and from QMP wallets.

Which payment methods should your store offer?
Offer the four methods shoppers in Qatar expect. Each one covers a different group of buyers.
Here's the Qatar default stack, in the order I'd show them at checkout:
- Apple Pay, for the fastest mobile checkout.
- Visa and Mastercard, including Amex if your gateway supports it at a fair rate.
- Debit card (NAPS / Himyan) through QPAY, labelled clearly in English and Arabic.
- Cash on delivery, with confirmation before dispatch.
Add Google Pay and Samsung Pay if your gateway includes them at no extra cost.
Price everything in Qatari riyals (QAR). The riyal is pegged at 3.64 to the US dollar, so your prices stay stable. Our guide to multi-currency checkout shows how to set it up.
What does a payment gateway cost in Qatar?
A payment gateway is the service that takes the shopper's payment and pays the money into your bank account. In Qatar, you pay it in a few layers.
Here's what to budget for:
- A percentage per payment. Published rates run from 1.10% for NAPS debit to about 2.5–2.85% for cards.
- A fixed fee per payment. Usually QAR 1–1.75, which hurts most on cheap orders.
- Setup and monthly fees. Some gateways charge them, some don't. Dibsy lists none on its standard plan.
- Your platform's fee. Shopify adds 0.2–2% when you use an outside gateway, and every Qatar Shopify store does.
- Extras. Refunds, chargebacks and currency conversion can carry fees, so ask.
Here's the good news. Qatar has no VAT, so there's no tax on the gateway's fee either.
Most Qatar gateways quote on application. Dibsy and Amazon Payment Services are the ones that publish Qatar rates.
Worked example: a QAR 250 order
Let's price one QAR 250 order three ways, using published rates.
| Fee line | NAPS debit via Amazon Payment Services | Credit card via Amazon Payment Services | Any method via Dibsy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Percentage fee | QAR 2.75 (1.10%) | QAR 7.13 (2.85%) | QAR 6.25 (2.5%) |
| Fixed fee | None listed | QAR 1.75 | QAR 1.00 |
| VAT on the fee | None | None | None |
| Total cost of the payment | QAR 2.75 (1.1%) | QAR 8.88 (3.6%) | QAR 7.25 (2.9%) |
The debit payment costs about a third of the card payment. That's why it pays to show the local debit option clearly.
Selling through Shopify on the Basic plan? Add QAR 5.00 per order for Shopify's 2% fee.
Let's scale that up. At 1,000 orders a month, the gap between debit and card is about QAR 6,100.
So what should you do? Ask each gateway for its NAPS rate separately, because some quote one blended rate for every method. Our guide to payment gateway fees shows how to compare quotes line by line.
How do you choose a payment gateway in Qatar?
Start with where your company is registered. That decides which gateways will take you, long before price does.
| Where your company is registered | Local NAPS debit? | Typical gateways |
|---|---|---|
| Qatar | Yes | Dibsy, Sadad, TESS, your bank's gateway, Amazon Payment Services, Tap, MyFatoorah |
| UAE or Saudi Arabia | Sometimes, through a regional gateway | Checkout.com, Tap, Amazon Payment Services |
| Elsewhere (US, EU, China) | Rarely | Checkout.com, Adyen, PayPal, cross-border providers |
If you hold a Qatari commercial registration (CR), use a gateway that's a QPAY member or connects to one. You'll get local debit, better approval rates and QAR payouts.
Qatar gateways at a glance
| Published Qatar rates | NAPS / QPAY debit | Apple Pay | Good fit for | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dibsy | 2.5% + QAR 1, no monthly fee | Small and growing Qatari stores | ||
| Sadad | Quote | Ask | Qatari businesses wanting a local provider | |
| TESS | Quote | Ask | Qatari businesses | |
| Bank gateways (QNB, Doha Bank) | Quote | Ask | Larger merchants with a bank relationship | |
| Amazon Payment Services | NAPS 1.10%, cards 2.85% + QAR 1.75 | Shopify stores and multi-country sellers | ||
| Checkout.com | Quote (enterprise) | Switched on by account manager | Larger brands selling across the GCC | |
| Stripe (UAE account) | UAE pricing | UAE companies taking cards only |
Every QPAY member can route Qatari debit cards. The differences are price, platform fit, payout speed and support.
Follow these steps to pick yours and go live:
- 1
Confirm your entity
A Qatari CR opens up QPAY members and local debit. Without one, see the notes for companies outside Qatar below.
- 2
List your must-have methods
Apple Pay, Visa/Mastercard, NAPS and Himyan debit, and COD through your courier.
- 3
Check your platform
On Shopify, pick a gateway with a working Shopify integration that includes QPAY, not just cards.
- 4
Get two or three written quotes
Ask for rates split by method, fixed and monthly fees, payout timing, minimum payouts and refund fees.
- 5
Prepare your documents
Your CR, a Qatari bank account in the company's name, the owner's ID and a live store with a refund policy and QAR prices.
- 6
Test with real cards
Pay with a Qatari debit card, a credit card and Apple Pay on mobile. Then test a refund on each.
- 7
Keep a backup gateway
A second gateway covers onboarding delays and outages, and lets you retry failed payments.
Test the debit flow on a phone, not just a laptop. QPAY sends the shopper to a hosted page and back, so your return page and order updates must work on mobile.

Cash on delivery and BNPL in Qatar
COD still helps a new brand win its first orders in Qatar, but it matters less here than in Oman or Kuwait. Buy now, pay later (BNPL) is limited.
Here's how to handle each one:
- Keep COD, but control it. Confirm every COD order on WhatsApp before it ships, and offer a small discount for paying online. Fast Doha delivery and Apple Pay make prepaid an easy habit for repeat buyers.
- Don't plan around Tabby or Tamara. Their merchant markets are Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Kuwait, plus Bahrain for Tamara. Qatar isn't on that list today.
- Use other ways to soften big prices. Bundles, free delivery thresholds and Apple Pay's quick checkout do more for conversion in Qatar than instalments.
Selling into Saudi Arabia or the UAE as well? Our Tabby vs Tamara comparison covers BNPL for those markets. For confirmation scripts and deposits, see how to cut fake and refused COD orders.
Qatar checkout checklist
Payment failures cost you the sale and often the customer. Run through this list before you launch:
Notes for Shopify stores
- No Shopify Payments. It isn't available in Qatar, so you'll connect an outside gateway.
- Budget Shopify's extra fee. It runs from 2% on Basic down to 0.2% on Plus, charged on top of the gateway fee.
- Check QPAY inside the Shopify integration. Ask every gateway whether its Shopify app includes NAPS debit or only cards.
- Set QAR as a store currency. Gateways charge in the store currency, so a USD-only store makes local debit harder.
Our guide to Shopify in Qatar covers the full store setup.
Notes for companies outside Qatar
- You can still take Qatari cards. Visa, Mastercard and Apple Pay work through a UAE or Saudi gateway. Local debit-only cards are the ones that fail.
- Stripe works only through a UAE company. See Stripe in the UAE for its GCC limits.
- Regional gateways can bridge the gap. Checkout.com, Tap and Amazon Payment Services operate across the GCC. Ask each one whether it can switch on QPAY for your entity.
- Marketplaces solve payments for you. Noon has delivered to Qatar since March 2025, and Qatari shoppers buy from Amazon.ae. Both collect payment and pay you out.
The wider rules for selling into Qatar are in our guide to ecommerce rules in Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman.
Notes for Chinese sellers
- Start on a marketplace. It's the fastest way to sell in Qatar with no Qatar gateway needed.
- Your own site needs a GCC entity. A UAE company is the usual first step. It opens regional gateways for cards and Apple Pay in Qatar.
- Price in QAR. Shoppers trust local prices, and the dollar peg keeps your margins stable.
- Use Qatar's no-VAT pricing. Your QAR price is the final price, which keeps the maths simple.
Why now is a good time
Qatar's payment system has changed a lot in two years. Himyan and Fawran both launched in 2024, and Himyan reached Bahrain in June 2026.
New delivery players keep arriving too. Noon started delivering to Qatar in March 2025, and Keeta launched in Doha that August. Every new option teaches more shoppers to pay online.
Set up QPAY, cards and Apple Pay now, and you're ready for that growth from day one. For how Qatar compares with its neighbours, see payment methods across the GCC, or head back to our payments hub.
