- Aramex is the Gulf's home-grown courier for domestic and cross-border GCC parcels. DHL Express is the global integrator for fast international shipments.
- A Riyadh to Jeddah parcel costs about SAR 19.26 with Aramex through an aggregator. DHL Express doesn't sell a mass-market domestic COD service.
- Express from China to Saudi Arabia costs about USD 13.50/kg and takes 1–5 days. DHL is the stronger pick when speed and paid-up duties matter.
- Where you book changes the bill. Aramex COD costs SAR 6 via OTO but SAR 8 + 1% of order value via Salla.
- Most stores pair one local courier for domestic orders with one express account for imports.
Aramex or DHL? For a Gulf online store, the honest answer is "both, for different jobs."
Aramex is the region's home-grown courier, based in Dubai and built for parcels moving inside the Gulf. DHL Express is the global integrator, built for fast, time-definite shipments between countries.
My verdict: use Aramex for domestic orders, COD and Dubai-to-Riyadh parcels. Use DHL to bring stock and samples in from China, the US or Europe. You'll also see what a month of shipping costs a real-sized Riyadh store.

Who is Aramex best for?
Aramex suits most stores selling to Gulf shoppers:
- Saudi and UAE stores shipping everyday orders inside the country.
- COD-heavy stores, which need low COD fees and reliable cash collection.
- Dubai-based sellers serving shoppers in Saudi Arabia and the other GCC states.
- Salla and Zid merchants, who can switch it on in a few clicks.
Who is DHL best for?
DHL Express suits sellers whose goods cross borders by air:
- Brands importing stock or samples from China, the US or Europe.
- Premium cross-border stores selling high-value items straight to Gulf shoppers.
- Sellers who want duties paid up front, so the buyer pays nothing at the door.
1. Domestic delivery and COD: Aramex
Aramex is a daily workhorse for Saudi and UAE stores. DHL Express isn't built for cheap domestic parcels.
Through an aggregator, an Aramex parcel from Riyadh to Jeddah costs about SAR 19.26. It usually arrives in 1–2 days in the big cities.
COD is where the gap is widest. Aramex collects cash in both countries for about SAR 6 a parcel via OTO. DHL Express offers only limited COD in the UAE and no mass-market domestic COD in Saudi Arabia.
So what does DHL do locally? Its Saudi last-mile push runs through AJEX, a Saudi courier in which DHL eCommerce took a minority stake in 2025.
Running a COD-heavy store? Our guide to cutting COD refusals shows how to keep return legs rare.
2. International express into the Gulf: DHL
DHL Express is the stronger pick when stock has to arrive fast from abroad. It sells time-definite air delivery with its own customs brokerage.
Here are typical express timings into the Gulf in 2026:
- China to Saudi Arabia. About USD 13.50/kg, 1–5 days.
- China to the UAE. About USD 5.68/kg, 2–5 days.
- US to Saudi Arabia. About 3–6 days door to door.
Aramex runs international express too, and it's often cheaper. DHL's edge is predictability and clearance strength.
Two costs catch sellers out:
- Volumetric weight. Express bills on length × width × height in cm ÷ 5,000, so bulky light boxes cost more than you'd think.
- Remote areas. DHL and FedEx can add about USD 30–35 per shipment for some Saudi addresses.

For cost per unit
- Incl. CFS & docs (origin and destination CFS, docs, THC/D/O)
- Billed on 1 cbm = 1,000 kg, min 1 cbm
- Usually uneconomic above ~70 kg
Red Sea and Hormuz tensions pushed Gulf rates up sharply: a 40ft to Jeddah went from ~$3,250–3,650 (mid-2025) to $8,200–12,000 (Aug 2026), and Oct 2026 quotes still run $6,600–9,400. Quotes are valid for days, not months.
Freight only. Excludes customs duty (5% of CIF), 15% import VAT, SABER shipment certificate (SAR 350), origin/destination charges (except LCL CFS/docs) and inland delivery.

More than about 70 kg? Air freight or sea usually wins. Our China to Saudi Arabia shipping guide compares every mode.
3. Cross-border GCC parcels: Aramex
Aramex covers all six GCC states by road and air, with COD at the destination. That makes it the natural courier for Dubai stock sold to Saudi, Kuwaiti or Qatari shoppers.
Through OTO, a Riyadh to Dubai parcel costs SAR 98 with Aramex. SMSA's land service costs about SAR 55, so quote both on that lane.
Each Dubai-to-Saudi parcel also pays Saudi VAT plus a SAR 15 customs fee. Delivery takes about 2–5 days. Our guide to shipping from Dubai to Saudi Arabia covers the paperwork.
4. Customs and duties-paid delivery: DHL
DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) means you pay duty and VAT before delivery, so the buyer pays nothing at the door. That matters, because a surprise charge at the door is a common reason shoppers refuse parcels.
DHL Express offers duties and taxes paid billing on business accounts. It clears the parcel and bills the charges back to you.
Aramex clears low-value parcels as a courier too. If you need DDP on every order, ask your Aramex account manager to set it up and confirm it in writing.
Duty itself is often zero on small orders. Saudi Arabia exempts online orders below SAR 1,000, and Dubai exempts parcels up to AED 1,000.
VAT still applies. The full rules are in our GCC duty-free limits guide.
5. Store integrations: Aramex, with a catch
Aramex is built into Salla and Zid, with label printing and COD settings. Salla also lists DHL among its 200+ shipping partners.
On Shopify, both have official apps. The Aramex app is rated just 1.7 out of 5, with reviews mentioning broken connections and missing HS codes on invoices. Many Shopify stores connect Aramex through an aggregator or a 3PL instead.
Where you book changes the COD fee, too. Aramex COD costs SAR 6 via OTO. Via Salla, it's SAR 8 plus 1% of the order value, before VAT.
6. Returns: Aramex
Aramex offers doorstep reverse pickup in Saudi Arabia and the UAE. That's the friendliest option for shoppers and keeps returns tracked.
DHL can return international parcels, but at express prices. For low-value cross-border returns, most sellers refund and let the customer keep the item, or route returns to a local 3PL.
Our Saudi returns guide shows how to set up the whole flow.
Worked example: one month for a Riyadh store
Say a Riyadh skincare store on Salla ships 400 domestic orders a month with Aramex. Of those, 40% are COD, and one in eight COD orders is refused. The average basket is SAR 200 before VAT.
It also flies in one 10 kg box of new samples from Shenzhen by DHL Express.
| Cost line | Calculation | Booked via OTO | Booked via Salla |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aramex outbound | 400 × SAR 19.26 | SAR 7,704 | SAR 7,704 |
| COD fee, delivered orders | 160 COD − 20 refused = 140 | SAR 840 (SAR 6 each) | SAR 1,400 (SAR 8 + SAR 2 each) |
| Return leg, refused orders | 20 × SAR 19.26 | SAR 385.20 | SAR 385.20 |
| Domestic total | SAR 8,929.20 | SAR 9,489.20 | |
| Per delivered order | ÷ 380 | SAR 23.50 | SAR 24.97 |
| DHL samples, 10 kg | 10 × USD 13.50 × 3.75 | SAR 506 | SAR 506 |
Same courier, same base rate. Booking through OTO instead of Salla saves SAR 560 a month, about SAR 1.47 per delivered order.
Duty and VAT on the samples come on top. Run the landed cost calculator for your goods.
Which should you choose?
So what should a newcomer do? Keep it simple:
- Domestic orders: start with Aramex through Salla, Zid or an aggregator. No contract needed.
- Imports and samples: open a DHL Express business account. It prices by account, so ask for a quote on your usual weights and lanes.
- Test for 30 days: track first-attempt delivery, refusals and COD payout days by city.
Alternatives worth testing
Aramex isn't the only local option. SMSA reaches small Saudi towns best, SPL is cheapest for light parcels, and iMile and Shipa charge less for COD. See every rate side by side in our Saudi courier companies compared.
In the UAE, local specialists such as Jeebly and Quiqup often beat both on next-day price. Our UAE courier comparison has their rates.
Notes for Chinese sellers
- Small parcels to shoppers. A DDP e-commerce line is usually cheaper than express, at USD 7–16/kg to the door by air.
- Samples and urgent stock. DHL Express gives fast, tracked delivery with clearance handled.
Notes for UAE-based stores
- Saudi orders from Dubai. Ship DDP and confirm COD orders on WhatsApp first. A refused cross-border parcel costs far more than a refused local one.
- VAT. Courier-cleared DDP parcels pay Saudi import VAT at the border and usually don't trigger Saudi VAT registration. Registration starts once you hold stock in Saudi Arabia.
- Imports into Dubai. Keep a DHL account for urgent stock from China or Europe.

Frequently asked questions
On Gulf lanes, nearly always, because DHL Express prices for time-definite international delivery rather than cheap local parcels. On imports from China or the US, the gap narrows on heavier boxes once you have a negotiated account. Quote both on your real weight and box size before you decide.
