- A Riyadh to Jeddah parcel costs about SAR 14 with SPL, 18 with J&T, 19.26 with Aramex and 22.20 with SMSA through an aggregator.
- COD fees range from SAR 3 (Shipa) to SAR 14 (Naqel) per parcel. Payout speed matters as much as the fee.
- Judge couriers on cost per delivered order. With 40% COD and one in five refused, a SAR 18 parcel really costs about SAR 24.
- Since January 2026, every Saudi parcel needs a National Address. Make the Short Address a required checkout field.
- Start with your platform's built-in shipping or an aggregator, test two couriers for 30 days, then sign direct at volume.
Saudi Arabia is the Gulf's biggest parcel market. And it's wide open: no courier controls more than about 15% of ecommerce delivery.
That's great news for your store. Couriers compete hard for online sellers, so you can get business rates from your very first order, with cash on delivery (COD) and returns built in.
The catch? The Kingdom is huge. A courier that's fast in Riyadh can be slow in Abha or Tabuk, so most stores use two or three.
Below, you'll see how SMSA, Aramex, SPL, J&T, Naqel, AyMakan, iMile, Shipa and DHL compare on price, COD, coverage and store apps, plus which mix fits your kind of store. It's part of our GCC logistics guides.
How does ecommerce delivery work in Saudi Arabia?
A courier collects parcels from your shop or 3PL warehouse, delivers them, collects any cash and handles returns. You pay per parcel, priced by weight and route.
Four things shape your choice:
- Distance. Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam get next-day delivery, and same-day from local stock. Smaller cities usually take 2–5 days.
- Addresses. Every parcel needs a National Address, or the courier can refuse it.
- Cash on delivery. Most Saudis now pay by card, mada or Apple Pay. COD is still the fallback many first-time buyers want, so your courier must collect cash and pay it back fast.
- How you book. You can book through Salla or Zid's built-in shipping, through an aggregator, or on a direct contract once you're big enough.
The couriers fall into four groups. National posts (SPL and its Naqel arm) reach the most towns.
Regional express firms (SMSA, Aramex) are the everyday workhorses. Ecommerce specialists (J&T, iMile, AyMakan, Shipa) compete on price and COD. Global integrators (DHL, FedEx, UPS) handle international express.

The main Saudi couriers in brief
SMSA Express
SMSA is the Saudi incumbent, founded in Riyadh in 1994. Saudi store builders call it the domestic workhorse, mainly because it reaches small towns best.
It runs 150+ micro-hubs close to dense neighbourhoods. Since late 2025, it can also hold your stock in those hubs for delivery within hours. It's the priciest of the big four on the Riyadh to Jeddah lane, so many stores keep it for harder routes.
Aramex
Aramex is the region's home-grown giant, controlled by Abu Dhabi's ADQ since 2025. It's the go-to for fast delivery in the big cities, usually in 1–2 days, and its automated Jeddah hub can sort up to 96,000 shipments a day.
Its COD fee is low through aggregators. Its official Shopify app is weak, so connect it through Salla, Zid or an aggregator.
SPL (Saudi Post) and Naqel
SPL is the national postal operator, and it runs the National Address system itself. It delivers to 146 cities and villages and offers home delivery, post office pickup and lockers.
For light, non-urgent parcels it's the cheapest of the big four. Its business bundles bring the per-parcel price down further.
Naqel is fully owned by SPL. It moves about 20 million shipments a year and is the specialist for heavy, bulky and B2B parcels.
J&T Express
J&T is a Chinese-founded network that entered Saudi Arabia in 2022 and runs its Middle East HQ from Riyadh. Its "new markets" division, which includes the Gulf, Egypt and Latin America, handled 400 million parcels in 2025.
It sits between SPL and Aramex on price and suits high-volume stores. Chinese-language support makes it popular with China-based sellers.
AyMakan, iMile and Shipa
These three compete hard on price and COD:
- AyMakan. A Riyadh courier founded in 2013 that covers all Saudi cities. It handles refrigerated and bulky deliveries and sells bundles from 20 shipments.
- iMile. Founded in Dubai in 2017 for cross-border sellers. In Saudi Arabia it runs 6 distribution centres and 85 delivery stations.
- Shipa. Agility's delivery arm, with 500+ vehicles. It had the lowest COD fee in OTO's comparison.
DHL Express and other names
DHL Express is the pick for importing stock, samples and premium international orders. It doesn't run a mass-market domestic COD service. FedEx and UPS play the same role.
You'll also see Zajil, Esnad, Barq, Thabit and AJEX on platform courier lists. They're worth testing for specific cities once your main couriers are set.

How much does a Saudi courier cost?
Through an aggregator, a standard domestic parcel costs about SAR 14–22. Lockers start from about SAR 10.
Business rates are a bargain next to walk-in prices. A 1 kg parcel at an Aramex counter costs about SAR 110.
Weight is charged on the higher of actual or volumetric weight. Volumetric weight is length × width × height in cm, divided by 5,000 or 6,000 depending on the courier.

Worked example: what a delivery really costs
The headline rate isn't what you pay. Refused COD parcels cost you twice, once out and once back. That's RTO (return to origin).
Say a Riyadh beauty store ships 500 orders a month with J&T at SAR 18 a parcel. Of those, 40% are COD, with an SAR 8 COD fee.
One in five COD parcels comes back.
| Line | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Prepaid orders | 300 × SAR 18 | SAR 5,400 |
| COD orders, outbound | 200 × SAR 18 | SAR 3,600 |
| COD fee on delivered orders | 160 × SAR 8 | SAR 1,280 |
| Return leg on refused orders | 40 × SAR 18 | SAR 720 |
| Total delivery cost | SAR 11,000 | |
| Cost per delivered order | SAR 11,000 ÷ 460 | SAR 23.91 |
That's 33% above the SAR 18 headline. You also lost 40 sales.
Now confirm every COD order on WhatsApp before dispatch and require a Short Address. If refusals fall to one in ten, the cost per delivered order drops to SAR 22.50. You also deliver 20 more orders a month.

The full playbook for cutting refusals is in our guide to reducing COD return-to-origin.
COD fees and how fast couriers pay you
COD fees run from SAR 3 to SAR 14 per parcel. Payout speed matters just as much.
Fees also depend on where you book. Through Salla, Aramex charges a flat fee plus 1% of the order value, which adds up on bigger baskets.
Then there's the wait. On direct contracts, sellers typically get COD cash back in 7–14 business days. Platform shipping and aggregators are often faster, with some paying twice a week.
Before you sign, ask:
- What day do you pay, and what's the cut-off?
- Do you send a reconciliation file listing every waybill?
- Are delivery and RTO fees deducted from the payout, or invoiced?
- Do your drivers carry card terminals?

Small towns, lockers and remote areas
Most orders go to three regions: Riyadh, Makkah (which includes Jeddah) and the Eastern Province. The rest are spread across hundreds of towns.
That's where couriers differ most. SMSA's micro-hubs and SPL's 580 outlets give them the best reach outside the big cities.
Lockers and pickup points help too. They suit shoppers who are out during the day, and they're the cheapest delivery option, from about SAR 10.
You'll find them through SPL, retail counters run by SMSA and Aramex, and Redbox, a self-pickup locker network in the major cities.

Returns and the National Address
Returns
There are two kinds of returns. RTO is a parcel the customer never accepted. A customer return is an item sent back after delivery.
Aramex, SMSA and J&T offer reverse pickup from the customer's door. SPL lets customers drop returns at any branch, which is cheap and reaches remote towns. Ask each courier what it charges for a return leg, because some bill the full outbound rate.
Our guide to returns in Saudi Arabia covers return windows and policies.
The National Address rule
Since 1 January 2026, couriers must not accept parcels without a valid National Address. The Short Address is an 8-character code, like ABCD1234, that points to one building.
This rule is good news for sellers. Clean addresses are expected to cut failed first deliveries from 12–15% to about 7%.
Salla and Zid have Short Address fields you can switch on. On Shopify, relabel an address line and make it required. The full set-up is in our National Address guide.
Which courier fits your store?
Match your main courier to what you sell and who buys it:
- New Salla or Zid store. Start with SMSA and Aramex through built-in shipping. Add SPL for light parcels.
- COD-heavy store. Favour low COD fees and fast payouts: Aramex for big cities, with iMile or Shipa to test.
- Light, low-value items (accessories, beauty). SPL or J&T for prepaid orders, plus lockers.
- Bulky goods (furniture, appliances). Naqel or AyMakan, which handle heavy parcels.
- Chilled food or flowers. AyMakan's refrigerated delivery, or a same-day courier from local stock.
- Customers outside the big cities. SMSA as your main courier, with SPL as backup.
- Importing stock or premium cross-border orders. DHL Express, alongside a local courier for domestic orders.
How to choose a Saudi courier
Choose on four things: reach in your cities, cost per delivered order, COD payout speed and how cleanly the courier connects to your store.
- 1
Map where your orders go
Split last month's orders by city. Big-city stores can lean on Aramex or J&T; stores with lots of small-town orders need SMSA or SPL.
- 2
Collect the Short Address
Make the National Address a required checkout field before you book a single parcel.
- 3
Shortlist two or three couriers
Pick one main courier, one cheaper courier for light prepaid parcels, and one for remote areas or bulky goods.
- 4
Book through your platform or an aggregator
You get business rates with no contract or minimum volume, plus one dashboard for labels and COD.
- 5
Run a 30-day split test
Track first-attempt delivery by city, RTO rate, complaints and how fast COD reaches your bank.
- 6
Negotiate at volume
At about 1,000 parcels a month, ask SMSA, Aramex and J&T for direct rates, weekly payouts and waived RTO fees.

Notes for Salla and Zid stores
You're in the best position. Salla links 200+ shipping partners, and Zid Ship connects 35 couriers through one contract.
SMSA, Aramex, J&T and Naqel are built into both, with label printing and COD settings. Zid Ship adds SPL (Saudi Post).
Each courier sets its own COD fee inside the platform, so compare them before you switch one on. Our Salla pricing guide explains what platform shipping costs.
Notes for Shopify and WooCommerce stores
- The official SMSA and Aramex Shopify apps are both rated 1.7 out of 5. Most Shopify stores book couriers through an aggregator instead.
- OTO and Torod both have Shopify and WooCommerce apps that print labels and sync COD status.
- Set flat shipping rates by zone at first. Live courier rates at checkout need carrier-calculated shipping on your plan.
Notes for foreign and Chinese sellers
- Domestic COD cash lands in a Saudi bank account. Without a Saudi entity, ship through a 3PL that holds courier contracts and pays you out.
- J&T and iMile are the most China-connected couriers. Both can collect COD on cross-border parcels, but payouts take about two weeks and returns are slow.
- Keep returns in the Kingdom. Have them sent to your Saudi 3PL, then resell or clear them locally.
Notes for UAE-based stores
Shipping from a Dubai warehouse? SMSA's land service runs about SAR 55 a parcel, against SAR 98 for Aramex express.
Each parcel also pays 15% Saudi VAT and a SAR 15 ZATCA customs fee. Delivery takes 2–5 days.
