- Zid's Rise plan costs SAR 99 a month with no yearly commitment. Shopify Basic costs Saudi stores $19–27 a month, and Shopify adds 0.6–2% on card and BNPL orders, depending on the plan.
- For a VAT-registered Saudi store selling SAR 30,000 a month, year one costs SAR 3,422 on Zid Growth against SAR 10,455 on Shopify Grow.
- Zid Pay switches on after a Nafath identity check, takes mada from 1% + SAR 1 and pays out every 2–3 days.
- Zid links your store to Amazon, Trendyol and Jahez, and lists it on its own Mazeed marketplace. Shopify needs apps for each channel.
- Shopify wins on apps, design freedom and selling outside the GCC. In the UAE, Shopify Payments removes its extra fee.
Want your own online store in Saudi Arabia? Zid and Shopify are two of the strongest options, and they're built for very different sellers.
Zid is the Saudi all-in-one. Payments, shipping, invoicing and marketplace links come in one Arabic dashboard. Shopify is the global giant, with the most apps and the best tools for selling abroad.
My verdict: if most of your customers are in Saudi Arabia, Zid costs less and gets you selling faster. If you're based in the UAE, or you're selling to several countries, Shopify is the better home.
Below, I compare them on cost, payments, shipping, marketplaces, support and growth. Notes for specific seller types come at the end.

Who is Zid best for?
Zid suits Saudi businesses that want everything in one place:
- Saudi sellers who want to launch fast, with payments and couriers ready on day one.
- Shops with physical branches, thanks to Zid Cashier and shared stock.
- Brands that also sell on marketplaces like Amazon and Trendyol.
- Owners who'd rather pay monthly, with no yearly lock-in.
Who is Shopify best for?
Shopify fits brands with bigger ambitions abroad:
- UAE-based brands, because Shopify Payments works there.
- Foreign brands adding the Gulf to an existing store.
- Design-led brands that want premium themes and custom features.
- Fast-growing stores that need deep automation or a headless build.
1. Cost: Zid wins for Saudi stores
Zid is cheaper to run in Saudi Arabia. The plan prices look close, but Shopify adds costs that Zid includes.
The biggest one is a fee on sales. Shopify Payments isn't available in Saudi Arabia, so you connect a local gateway. Shopify then charges a third-party fee on each card and BNPL (buy now, pay later) order: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow.
Zid takes no cut of your sales at all, so you pay only the payment fee.
Worked example: year one for a SAR 30,000-a-month store
Picture a Riyadh skincare brand selling SAR 30,000 a month. It's registered for VAT, so it needs ZATCA e-invoices.
That last point picks the Zid plan. Zid's tax settings start on Growth, so we compare Zid Growth with Shopify Grow. Both include five staff accounts.
Here are the inputs:
- Sales. SAR 360,000 a year.
- Payment mix. 75% by card or BNPL, 25% cash on delivery (COD).
- Plans. Both are billed yearly, and Shopify's USD price is converted at SAR 3.75.
- Zid payouts. 12 deposits a month at SAR 3 each.
- ZATCA app on Shopify. SAR 200 a month, mid-range for Saudi e-invoicing apps.
- Other Shopify extras. A $300 RTL theme, plus a COD-verification app and a reviews app at $20 a month each.
| Year-one cost (ex-VAT) | Zid Growth | Shopify Grow |
|---|---|---|
| Subscription | SAR 2,990 | SAR 2,430 ($54 × 12) |
| Shopify fee: 1% of SAR 270,000 in card and BNPL sales | – | SAR 2,700 |
| Payout fees (144 × SAR 3) | SAR 432 | Set by your gateway |
| ZATCA e-invoicing | Included | SAR 2,400 |
| Arabic RTL theme (one-off) | Included | SAR 1,125 |
| COD-verification and review apps | Included | SAR 1,800 |
| Total, year one | SAR 3,422 | SAR 10,455 |
Zid saves this store about SAR 7,000 in year one. That's before agency help, which typically runs SAR 5,000–15,000 to localise a Saudi Shopify store.
Basic costs more than Grow here. Its 2% fee outweighs the cheaper plan once card sales pass about SAR 13,000 a month.
Every plan and add-on is in our guide to Zid pricing and Zid Payments fees.
2. Payments: Zid Pay in Saudi, Shopify in the UAE
Saudi shoppers mostly pay by mada debit card, usually through Apple Pay. Zid handles that with its own gateway, Zid Pay.
Zid Pay takes mada, Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay and STC Pay. BNPL comes too: Tabby, Tamara, MISPay, Emkan and Madfu, with no extra charge from Zid.
Here's what it costs on the Growth plan:
- Card fees. 1% + SAR 1, 2.3% + SAR 1 or 3.3% + SAR 1, depending on the card. Mada sits at the low end.
- No fixed costs. There's no setup or monthly fee, and refunds cost nothing extra.
- Fast payouts. Money lands every 2–3 days, once you have SAR 100 or more.
- Deposit fee. SAR 3 per payout, or free into a Riyad Bank account.
How Zid Pay activation works
Zid Pay uses Nafath, the Saudi national digital ID app, to confirm who gets paid. Have your CR (commercial registration) or freelance document and a Saudi IBAN ready.
- 1
Upgrade to Rise or higher
The free Starter plan only takes bank transfer and COD. Online card payments start on Rise.
- 2
Request Zid Pay in your dashboard
Enter your business details, CR or freelance document and your Saudi bank account.
- 3
Approve the Nafath check
Confirm the request in the Nafath app on your phone. It takes a minute.
- 4
Wait for review
Zid checks your documents. Missing or mismatched names are the usual cause of delays.
- 5
Switch on BNPL and Apple Pay
Turn on Tabby, Tamara or MISPay, then place a test order before you launch.
On Shopify, you sign up with a separate Saudi gateway instead, such as Tap, HyperPay or Geidea. Gateway rates on mada are similar to Zid Pay, about 1%. Shopify's own fee then sits on top.
The UAE flips this. Shopify Payments works there, with no extra fee and no gateway contract. Our list of Shopify payment gateways in Saudi Arabia compares the Saudi options.
3. Shipping: Zid Ship
Zid makes delivery easier out of the box. Zid Ship gives you negotiated rates with Aramex, SMSA, J&T and Naqel. You print labels from the dashboard on every plan, including the free one, and COD collection is built in.
On Shopify, you add couriers yourself:
- Official carrier apps are weak. Shopify's Aramex and SMSA apps are rated 1.7 stars.
- Live rates cost extra. Courier rates at checkout need Advanced, or Grow with an add-on.
- Shopify Shipping isn't offered. Its discounted labels don't cover Saudi merchants.
Most Saudi Shopify stores use a shipping aggregator or a 3PL to fill the gap. Our comparison of Saudi shipping aggregators shows which ones connect to Shopify.

4. Selling on marketplaces: Zid
Want your products on Amazon and Trendyol too? Zid connects your store to both, and to the food app Jahez.
Zid was the first Arab store platform to integrate with Amazon, in October 2024. Your stock and orders stay in one dashboard, so you don't oversell.
Zid also lists stores on Mazeed, its own shopping marketplace. Zid says it reaches about 5 million customers, and it's open even on the free plan.
The Trendyol link matters right now. Trendyol works with Zid to bring Saudi sellers onto its Gulf marketplace. Saudi Arabia makes up about 75% of its Gulf orders.
Shopify can sell on marketplaces too, through third-party connector apps. They work, but each is another subscription to manage.
Thinking about Trendyol? Our guide to selling on Trendyol in the GCC covers fees and approval.
5. Merchant support: Zid
Zid's support is local and in Arabic. From the Rise plan up, you can reach its team by live chat, WhatsApp or phone.
That matters on a launch day. When Zid Pay holds a payout or a courier misses a pickup, you talk to someone who knows Saudi gateways and couriers.
Shopify's support runs 24/7, but in English. It's excellent for Shopify itself. Saudi problems, like a gateway approval or a ZATCA app, go to the app maker or a partner agency.
The Starter plan has no live chat, so upgrade before launch if you want help on call.
6. Apps, design and growth abroad: Shopify
Shopify wins this one clearly. It has more than 8,000 apps against Zid's 400+, plus the best themes on the market with full code access. Custom bundles, subscriptions or a headless storefront are all easier on Shopify.
Selling outside the Gulf is Shopify's home ground too. Shopify Markets runs many countries, currencies and languages from one store.
Zid holds its own for developers, though. Its open API and webhooks make ERP and B2B integrations straightforward. It also brings local growth tools, like Zid Voice for abandoned-cart calls and Zid Financing for stock.

Which platform should you sell on?
7 quick questions. We score Shopify, Salla, Zid, WooCommerce, Amazon and noon for your situation.
Question 1 of 7
Where is your business based?
Where your company or trade licence is registered.
Scores are an editorial estimate based on published pricing and features as of October 2026 (noon details partly unverified); confirm with each provider before committing.
And remember, this isn't forever. Plenty of brands prove their products on Zid, then add or move to Shopify when they expand abroad.
Notes for shops with branches and B2B sellers
- Zid Cashier links your tills and website. Stock updates across branches as you sell.
- B2B tools are strong. Agencies rate Zid's customer-specific prices, quotes and credit terms the best of the local platforms.
- Shopify now has native B2B on every plan. Since April 2026, Basic to Advanced include up to 3 B2B catalogs. Unlimited catalogs need Plus, from $2,300 a month.
Our Zid review covers Zid Cashier in more detail.
Notes for UAE-based brands
- Shopify is the natural fit. Shopify Payments works for UAE mainland and free-zone companies, with no third-party fee.
- Zid does serve the UAE, but its payments and couriers are strongest in Saudi Arabia.
- Selling into Saudi Arabia later? Add a Saudi gateway once you have a Saudi entity, so you can take mada properly.
Our guide to Shopify in the UAE walks through setup.
Notes for foreign and Chinese brands
Go with Shopify. Zid Pay needs a Saudi business, a Nafath check and a Saudi bank account, which a foreign company won't have.
Zid becomes an option once you have a Saudi company or a local distributor who runs the store for you.
Notes for Zid merchants thinking of moving
- Moving is routine. Products, customers and orders transfer, and Zid's API makes exporting easier.
- Plan 2–4 weeks for a standard store, and avoid moving right before Ramadan or White Friday.
- Rebuild the local pieces. On Shopify, you replace Zid Pay, Zid Ship and invoicing with a gateway, carrier apps and a ZATCA app.
